Course Description
This course is designed to introduce the basic knowledge and skills on the research writing and how to use them to prepare the scientific paper and cope with the publication-related problems. For instance, students will learn: (1) plan and organize your paper, and structure each paragraph and each sentence logically so that the reader can easily follow the logical build-up towards various conclusions; (2) decide what to include in the various parts of your paper and what typical phrases to use; (3) increase the level of readability of your paper by helping readers to quickly understand what you are saying, etc. By learning this course, students should have deep understanding on these knowledge and skills of research writing and have the capability of using them to publish their research achievements professionally. All of these are assessed in test and examination.

STGC8003 – Research Methods and Ethics

Course Description
This course aims to provide PhD students with research skills that are essential to become a successful researcher. The need for research ethics and the responsibility of the researcher (the student) and to avoid committing acts of academic dishonesty (such as through using citations and references). The topics of this course will include research methodology, professional ethics and academic integrity, and oral presentation and paper writing techniques. Students will be required to perform a literature survey, to construct a research proposal, and to write a paper summary in the style of formal scientific paper, in one of their familiar research topics.
