Prof Wong Pak Kin, associate dean (academic affairs) of the University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), was recently elected fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), in recognition of his contributions to the academic and engineering community. Fellow is the highest grade of membership of the institution. Three other UM faculty members are current fellows of the HKIE. They are Rector Wei Zhao, Vice Rector (Academic Affairs) Lionel Ni, and FST Dean Philip Chen.

The HKIE was initially founded in Hong Kong in 1947 as The Engineering Society of Hong Kong to promote the professional standing, interests, and technical standards of local engineers across a broad spectrum of engineering specialisations. The HKIE has established close relationships with engineering institutions and authorities around the world. It has signed agreements for reciprocal recognition of professional and technologist qualifications with engineering institutions and authorities in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and China, as well as agreements for collaboration with institutions in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia.

Four bachelor’s degree programmes offered by the FST, namely Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Electromechanical Engineering, and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, were accredited for the first time by the HKIE in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Subsequently, the four programmes gained official recognition by signatories to the Washington Accord and the Seoul Accord via the HKIE. In 2016, the programmes received full accreditation again from the HKIE. Students starting these programmes in or after the 2011/2012 academic year will be eligible to apply for HKIE membership upon graduation to receive professional qualifications recognised worldwide.

Prof Wong Pak Kin is an associate dean of the FST and a professor of the Department of Electromechanical Engineering. He played a major role in the accreditation process of the faculty’s engineering and computer science programmes. Prof Wong is also a fellow of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers.
