To drive the development of Macao’s smart city, Companhia de Telecomunicações de Macau (CTM) and the University of Macau (UM) signed a strategic cooperation agreement as early as 2018. Through the complementary advantages of both parties’ resources, they have deepened the cooperation in industry-academia-research projects, successfully completing the “Tourism Big Data Algorithm R&D” and “Automated Customer Experience Testing Tool Development” projects, injecting new vitality into the diversified development of Macao’s 1+4 industries.
On May 23, the two parties renewed the strategic cooperation agreement. In the future, they will continue to focus on technologies such as AI and big data, creating more smart application scenarios and solutions that cater to Macao’s development needs.
The signing ceremony took place at CTM booth during the BEYOND International Technology and Innovation Expo (BEYOND EXPO) in Macao, witnessed by Prof Ge Wei, UM Vice Rector (Research), and Mr. Poon Fuk Hei, CEO of CTM. Prof. Xu Cheng-Zhong, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, and Ms. Ebel Cham, Vice President of Business at CTM, signed the strategic cooperation agreement, signifying that the two parties will deepen their industry-academia-research project collaboration in areas such as AI and big data, based on their previous fruitful cooperation results.
Ms. Ebel Cham said that UM’s excellent research team and faculty-student community have always been at the forefront of global technology, researching and exploring various innovative applications, making them an important partner for Macao Telecom in promoting the transformation of smart city research results. Since 2018, the two parties have collaborated in the fields of big data and IoT, and in 2023 they have driven the cooperation on “Tourism Big Data Algorithm R&D” and “Automated Customer Experience Testing Tool Development” projects, with the results of the tourism big data algorithm R&D project becoming an important part of supporting Macao’s smart tourism development. In the future, Macao Telecom will continue to collaborate with UM in areas such as 5.5G, AI, big data, and smart IoT applications, aiming to create more smart application scenarios for Macao.
Prof. Xu Cheng-Zhong said that UM has a strong technical accumulation in communication technology and applications, especially in communication theory, algorithms, hardware chip implementation, and smart city IoT applications, all at the forefront of science and technology. The strong collaboration between UM and Macao Telecom is believed to have a greater driving force for the development of Macao’s communications. This renewal is a recognition and affirmation of the previous work, and the subsequent cooperation, especially in the direction of industry-academia-research, is expected to reach a higher and greater level.
During the event, the two parties also held a project delivery ceremony, where the “Tourism Big Data Algorithm R&D” project was delivered, which will help Macao Telecom’s big data service applications, further precisely analyzing and exploring the relationship between attractions and tourists, expanding the usability of data and supporting the transformation of more application scenarios. The “Automated Customer Experience Testing Tool Development” project will accelerate Macao Telecom’s implementation of smart workflow, improving work efficiency, testing accuracy, and expanding test coverage, better understanding the customer’s service experience. The successful delivery and application of these two research projects mark the start of the next stage of new research project collaboration between the two parties.
Afterward, representatives from UM visited Macao Telecom’s booth, where they were introduced to “Digital Macau 3.0” network infrastructure and smart applications in areas such as cultural tourism, the big health industry, AI+big data potential and applications, the latest network security technologies and multi-network integration, and the new generation of ultra-fast networks.
