Huang Hongliang is the outstanding master’s graduate of the 2023/2024 academic year from the Department of Mathematics (MAT) at the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), University of Macau (UM). His graduation project focused on utilizing neural network technology to address the singularities present in fractional differential equations, with applications spanning medicine and biology, quantum mechanics, and aerospace. Huang’s exceptional cross-disciplinary innovation not only earned him the title of the Department of Mathematics’ best master’s student but also distinguished him among all awardees to obtain the best master’s student award of the Faculty this year, in recognition of his excellent academic level and persistent efforts.
Boldly challenge interdisciplinary integration
Under the guidance of his supervisor, Prof Siu Long LEI, Huang chose a highly challenging research direction. Unlike traditional methods, he innovatively combined neural networks with the characteristics of fractional differential equations, not only overcoming the limitations of traditional methods in dealing with singularity problems, but also significantly improving the computational efficiency and model accuracy through algorithm optimization. This research not only requires a solid mathematical foundation, but also the ability to integrate knowledge across disciplines. Huang’s self-learning ability, quick grasp of new knowledge, and integration of interdisciplinary knowledge demonstrated in his graduation project were impressive.
Lay the foundation for a future research path
Reflecting on the academic challenges, Huang recounted having to start from scratch with coding, developing algorithms for the novel neural network model. While pursuing algorithm efficiency, he also needed to delve into underlying technologies such as matrix computation. Meanwhile, he also extensively explored the relevant theoretical foundations, including fractional partial differential equations and functional analysis, ensuring that his research results could be integrated with theory. The entire process not only broadened Huang’s academic horizons, but also honed his self-learning ability and independent problem-solving skills. These cross-disciplinary research experiences laid the foundation for his research journey.
The academic level is widely recognized
Regarding his choice of Mathematics as his subject, Huang stated that the academic atmosphere at UM was very free, allowing him to independently select a supervisor and research area. He was profoundly drawn to Prof Siu Long LEI’s accomplishments in the field of fractional differential equations. Combining his interest in neural networks from his undergraduate years, under Prof Lei’s guidance, he successfully integrated the two and learned the steps of publishing academic papers and rigorous mathematical logic in the process. Huang has published a total of 12 academic articles, including several high-quality papers in the Science Citation Index (SCI) Category Q1 and Q2. Additionally, he has represented UM and won the first and third prizes in the “Huawei Cup” China Postgraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling in two consecutive sessions, reflecting the widespread recognition of his academic capabilities within China.
Passionate with Mathematics and Moving forward pragmatically
Regarding his current achievements and recognition, Huang has always maintained humility. He attributed his success mainly to luck and tireless efforts. He believes his research success was not an overnight achievement but rather the result of long-term dedication, diligent study, and a profound love for mathematics. In the future, Huang intends to pursue a Ph.D. in Mathematics at UM, with aspirations to contribute to the educational sector in Guangdong or Macau as a faculty member, thereby embodying his devotion to mathematics and commitment to societal contribution. The nurturing academic atmosphere at UM, coupled with unwavering support and guidance from his supervisor, Prof Siu Long LEI, have been instrumental in Huang’s development and success. Huang’s successful experience will inspire more students to move forward steadfastly, work hard, explore the unknown, and challenge themselves on the path of scientific research.
