Wong Fai, Associate Professor from the Department of Computer and Information Science at the Faculty of Science and Technology, has been awarded the University of Macau’s (UM) Teaching Excellence Award for the 2023/2024 academic year. Since joining UM, Prof. Wong has remained true to his educational philosophy that the essence of education is to ignite a passion for learning and a spirit of discovery among students. He goes beyond simply imparting knowledge by actively pushing for and personally contributing to the modernization of the curriculum, ensuring it stays aligned with industry developments. His commitment to enhancing the curriculum also involves meeting international standards of quality. Prof. Wong teaches a diverse array of subjects, including natural language processing, machine translation, compiler construction, and data science, along with other leading-edge topics. He encourages his students to extend their learning beyond the classroom walls, fostering independent inquiry as well as critical thinking and practical problem-solving skills. In his classes, he creates an open and communicative atmosphere and continually refines his teaching methods based on student feedback. The final year projects (FYPs) under his supervision have garnered widespread recognition, winning multiple awards at both local and Asia-Pacific competitions.
Prof. Wong is deeply honored to receive this award and is grateful to the university for acknowledging his efforts in teaching, as well as the support from colleagues and students. He is inspired to continue fostering a mutual motivation and dedication to the core mission of delivering top-quality education. His goal is to nurture a generation that is courageous, practical, and responsible.
UM has always valued quality teaching and students’ learning experiences. Therefore, it has established the annual “Teaching Excellence Award” to encourage and recognize outstanding teaching faculty. The selection and evaluation process for the Excellence in Teaching Award is rigorous, with a representative selection committee selecting one award-winning professor from numerous nominations across various faculties. Nominees are all are faculty-level teaching award recipients. Selection criteria include the following: teaching philosophy, depth of knowledge in the subject area, outstanding communication skills and teaching effectiveness, outstanding contributions to the quality of curriculum development, the ability to promote student learning by stimulating and sustaining the intellectual development of students, innovative approach to teaching and learning, and leadership in promoting teaching excellence within and outside the university.
This award not only highly affirms Prof. Wong’s personal teaching achievements but also serves as evidence of the teaching quality and educational innovation efforts of the Faculty of Science and Technology. In the future, the faculty will continue to support and encourage outstanding teachers like Prof Wong, jointly advancing the excellence in higher education and nurturing more high-quality talents for the future.
澳門大學科技學院電腦及資訊科學系副教授黃輝榮獲2023/2024年度澳門大學卓越教學獎。自從加入澳門大學以來，黃教授始終堅持其教育理念，認為教育的真諦在於激發學生的學習熱情和探索精神，不僅僅是知識的傳授。他積極推動課程體系的現代化改革，確保教學內容與行業發展趨勢保持一致，並致力於提升課程質量，使之達到國際認可的水平。黃教授教授的科目範圍廣泛，包括自然語言處理、機器翻譯、編譯原理、數據科學等前沿學科，他鼓勵學生突破課堂限制，自主探索，並培養批判性思維和解決實際問題的能力。在課堂上，他致力於創造一個開放、互動教學的學習環境，並根據學生反饋不斷調整教學策略。在黃教授的悉心指導下，他指導的學生項目贏得了多個獎項，在本地乃至亞太地區比賽中斬獲多項大獎。
