Jiang Dechao and Zhang Tong are outstanding undergraduates of the 2023/2024 academic year from the Department of Electromechanical Engineering (EME) of the University of Macau (UM). They were awarded the Best Project Award in the Department’s final year project for their Development and testing of a mobile manipulation robot – “Libot”. The robot combines autonomous navigation and image recognition technology, enabling automatic book scanning and return, significantly improving the efficiency and intelligence of library operations. Library staff can reduce similar repetitive labor tasks and devote scarce human resources to work that requires human interaction, comprehensively enhancing the quality of library services. This project not only showcases the potential of “Internet + Social Services”, but also meets the demand for intelligent social services, and contributes to the construction of a smart city and the modernization of public services.
Dare to Try, Overcome Difficulties
Throughout the process of researching the library operating robot, Jiang and Zhang reviewed a large number of academic papers and previous industrial solutions on robot design but were unsure which specific plan could be applied to the library robot. Throughout this process, they underwent numerous trials and setbacks, continuously reflecting and making adjustments, and finally overcame the daunting challenges within a limited time. Although the project only completed the simulation test stage, it demonstrated their innovative abilities, technical knowledge, collaborative skills and problem-solving capabilities, ultimately winning the unanimous recognition of the judges. To ensure the successful launch of the project, during their senior year, they spent two days a week in in-depth research, pouring in considerable effort, which also reflects their pursuit of perfection and sense of responsibility for their studies. In the future, Jiang and Zhang plan to optimize the library robot and explore its application potential in areas such as contactless meal delivery in hotels and logistics.
UM as the Starting Point
The two students chose UM as the starting point for their higher education, each with their own reasons. Zhang was attracted by the university’s English teaching environment, high-quality teaching, and international atmosphere, while Jiang’s choice was based on his family’s recommendation. Looking back on their university life, Jiang recalled the pressure he faced in the first semester of his sophomore year due to the high credit load, describing it as a time completely occupied by learning. Zhang shared the challenges he faced in the second semester of his junior year, including the intense course design and serving as the president of Institution of Mechanical Engineers Student Chapter, University of Macau Students ’Union. Despite the immense pressure, they overcame each learning obstacle through tireless efforts. In addition, the residential college system at UM also played an important role in their growth. The residential colleges often organize various activities, not only broadening the students’ horizons, but also strengthening their cohesion and sense of belonging to the college and the university, creating a warm and family-like atmosphere. Furthermore, the Department of Electromechanical Engineering provided them with a learning platform that combines theory and practice, with course content covering frontier fields such as robotics, soft electronics and additive manufacturing, providing a broad stage for their personal development.
Embarking on a new journey
Jiang received offer from the University of California, Berkeley and the Technical University of Denmark, eventually chose to pursue further studies in the United States. Zhang was admitted to several renowned institutions, including Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and decided to study in Singapore. Both of them had a half-year exchange experience at the University of Southern Denmark and Xi’an Jiaotong University. This not only broadened their horizons, but also strengthened their independent living abilities and laid the foundation for their future research directions.
Regarding their future development after graduation, Zhang stated that he will decide whether to work directly or pursue a doctoral degree based on the job market situation, focusing on the fields of Robot Control and Automation. Jiang aspires to start his career in Silicon Valley in the United States. They advise their juniors to plan their personal growth and career development early, including clarifying their personal interests, leveraging their strengths, fully utilizing university resources, expanding their knowledge, proactively communicating with professors, seniors, and industry professionals, in order to create more opportunities for their future career paths.
The experiences of Jiang and Zhang serve as exemplary models for graduates of the Department of Electromechanical Engineering. They not only dare to innovate and pursue excellence in academics, but also have a clear direction in personal growth and career planning, setting a good example for other students. UM, with its diverse learning environment, internationalized educational philosophy, and residential college system, has laid the groundwork for student success, and will continue to cultivate more outstanding young students with potential and the courage to pursue their dreams.

勇於嘗試,克服難關
在研究圖書館操作機器人的過程中,江德超和張桐查閱了海量有關機器人設計的學術論文,卻不確定具體哪個方案可應用在圖書館機器人上。過程中他們經歷過多次嘗試和失敗、不斷反思與修正,在有限的時間內最終克服重重難關。雖然項目僅完成模擬測試階段,卻展示了他們創新能力、技術知識、協作能力及解決實際問題的能力,最終贏得了評委的一致肯定。為了確保項目順利推出,大四期間,每週固定兩天進行集體討論及深入研究,其餘課餘時間則遊走於學術論文和各種論壇中,傾注了大量心血,也反映出精益求精及對自身學業的責任感。未來江德超和張桐計劃優化圖書館機器人,探索其在酒店無接觸送餐和物流快遞等領域的應用潛力。
澳大作起點
兩位同學選擇澳門大學作為高等教育的起點,各有所因。張桐被學校的英語教學環境、高質量的教學和國際氛圍吸引,而江德超則是基於家人的推薦。回望大學時光,江德超回憶起大二上學期面對高學分課程的壓力,形容那是一段全被學習占據的時光。張桐則分享了大三下學期的挑戰,包括緊張的課程設計和擔任英國機械工程師學會澳門大學學生分部會長的職責。盡管壓力重重,但他們通過不懈努力,成功跨越了每一道道學習障礙。此外,澳大的住宿書院制度也在他們的成長歷程中扮演了重要角色。書院經常舉辦各類活動,不僅開闊了同學們的視野,也增強了他們對書院及大學產生強烈凝聚力及歸屬感,營造了如家一樣的溫馨氛圍。此外,澳門大學的機電工程系為他們提供了理論與實踐相結合的學習平台,課程內容覆蓋了機械、自動化和電器工程等前沿領域,為個人發展提供了廣闊的舞台。
揚帆起航
江德超獲得了美國加州大學伯克利分校和丹麥技術大學的錄取,最終選擇美國繼續深造。張桐則被新加坡南洋理工大學、香港大學、香港中文大學和香港科技大學等多所知名學府錄取,決定赴新加坡求學。兩人曾在南丹麥大學及西安交通大學有過交流半年的經歷,這不僅拓寬了他們的視野,也增強了獨立生活的能力,也奠定了未來研究方向。對於畢業後的發展,張桐表示會根據就業市場情況決定是直接工作還是攻讀博士學位,專注於計算控制和機器人領域。江德超則渴望在美國矽谷開啟職業生涯。他們建議學弟學妹們要盡早規劃個人成長和職業發展方向,包括明確個人興趣、發揮所長、充分利用學校資源、擴大知識面,主動與教授、前輩和業界交流,為未來的職業道路創造更多機會。
