The 17th East Asia Section of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (EASIAM) conference was held at the University of Macau (UM), Macao SAR, China from 28 June to 1 July, showcasing UM’s growing influence and pivotal role on the international academic stage. Over four days, the event drew significant attention from scholars in the fields of applied mathematics and industry worldwide, reinforcing the university’s reputation as a hub for cutting-edge research and innovation.
The opening ceremony features welcoming speeches by UM Rector, Prof Yonghua Song, the chair of the organizing committee, Associate Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology (Research and Graduate Studies) Prof Xiao-Chuan Cai, and the chair of SIAM East Asian Section, Prof Yang Xiang. Renowned mathematicians, including Prof Hans De Sterck from the University of Waterloo, and Prof Zuowei Shen from the National University of Singapore, delivered plenary talks, highlighting the latest advancements and emerging trends in mathematical research. One of the major highlights of the conference was the invited talks, where six professors—Jinrun Chen, Yuwei Fan, Akiko Fukuda, Wei Gong, Shizuo Kaji, and Yueh-Cheng Kuo—shared their cutting-edge research and insights. These invited talks covered a wide range of topics, providing deep dives into specialized areas of mathematics and sparking stimulating discussions among attendees. In addition to the plenary and invited talks, the conference featured several parallel sessions, each focusing on different subfields of applied mathematics. These sessions allowed participants to choose the topics most relevant to their interests and engage in in-depth discussions with experts and peers. A special session, the SPP (Student Prize Presentation), was held to recognize and showcase the work of outstanding student researchers. The awards ceremony, part of the SPP, honored three exceptional students for their achievements. Yesom Park from Seoul National University received the first prize, while Yifei Li from National University of Singapore and Qingyu Wu from Peking University received the second prize. This session highlighted the innovative contributions and promising potential of the next generation of mathematicians.
Founded in 1998, EASIAM is the authoritative branch of SIAM in East Asia, dedicated to promoting the application of mathematics in science, engineering, and technology within the region. By fostering foundational research, education, and interdisciplinary studies in mathematics and science, the society aims to advance the field. The annual conference provides an invaluable platform for scholars from various East Asian countries and regions to exchange ideas and collaborate. The successful hosting of the conference not only underscored UM’s significance as a global center for applied mathematics research, but also invigorated the development of industrial and applied mathematics in East Asia, paving the way for broader prospects in future collaborations and studies.
