Liu Zhaoxi, an outstanding master’s student of the 2023/2024 academic year from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Macau (UM). She comes from Shanxi Province, China, and developed a strong interest in the field of electricity since middle school, and this passion accompanied her all the way to the master’s programme in Electrical and Computer Engineering at UM. Liu obtained her bachelor’s degree from a normal university in the major of Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Automation. During her two-year master’s study at UM, she not only received the whole person development scholarship, but also made contributions to the optimization of power system operation and environmental sustainability through her innovative research on offshore wind power integration and power system applications.
Research on Offshore Wind Power and Power Grid Frequency Safety
Prof Zhang Hongcai, Liu’s supervisor, had close cooperation with of UM and power grid companies, which provided her with the opportunity to delve deeper into the field of offshore wind power. Liu was deeply interested in the topic of the impact of offshore wind power on power system frequency safety. To deepen her research, she proactively joined the State Key Laboratory of Smart City Internet of Things and became a member of the research team during her master’s study. This not only allowed her to get in touch with more cutting-edge technologies and innovative thinking, but she also overcame the numerous challenges in her research and efficiently completed her graduation project. Her research project focused on offshore wind power forecasting and power system frequency safety. She adopted advanced deep learning techniques, including Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), combined with the K-means clustering algorithm, to successfully predict the day-ahead output curve of offshore wind power and provide effective suggestions for power grid dispatching. Furthermore, she also studied the impact of offshore wind power on power system frequency safety and determined the maximum proportion of offshore wind power connected to the grid while ensuring frequency safety. These studies they are of great significance for optimizing power system operation and promoting environmental sustainability.
Whole Person Development
In Macau, Liu experienced not only academic growth, but also the unique warmth of the city. She mentioned, “I particularly like the way people interact with each other here, it feels very warm and friendly.” Macau’s cuisine and pleasant climate were also impressive to her, becoming one of the important reasons for her to pursue further studies here. She represented the University of Macau to attend conferences such as the 2023 Power and Energy Panda Forum (PandaFPE) and the 2nd International Conference on Power Science and Technology (IEEE ICPST) in 2024, which not only provided her with opportunities to exchange with international peers and broaden her horizons, but also enriched her professional knowledge and insights. In addition to focusing on academic research, Liu’s extracurricular life was also vibrant. She was actively involved in various student organizations and clubs, including serving as the professional representative of the UM Postgraduate Association, the second-term Chinese Culture Ambassador, and joining the UM Sailing Club, UM Sports Volunteer Programme, UM National Flag Team, and the Community Safe Youth Leadership Programme. These activities not only enriched her extracurricular life, but also allowed her to make friends from diverse backgrounds. As a result, Liu was awarded UM’s whole person development scholarships, which highlighted her comprehensive development beyond academics.
Giving Back to Society
Liu also once served as a volunteer teacher in Heilongjiang for half a year, guiding middle school physics, and this experience further strengthened her determination to enter the field of education. For the future, Liu plans to join the teaching staff of Tong Nam School in Macau, and she looks forward to contributing her knowledge and experience to society. Liu’s story is a microcosm of the UM’s cultivation of all-round talents. Her experiences not only reflect the importance of academic research, but also showcase UM’s unwavering efforts in promoting the comprehensive development of students.
