A paper by Prof Lo Kin Ho, head of the University of Macau’s (UM) Department of Electromechanical Engineering and a joint associate professor at the Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering, has been selected as the cover story of the November 2014 issue of the SCI-E journal Steel Research International (SRI).
The paper by Prof Lo is entitled “Deformation-Induced Role Switching Between Ferrite and Austenite in the Precipitation of Carbides at High Temperatures in Duplex Stainless Steels”. In the paper, it is shown that the austenite phase of ferritic-austenitic stainless steel, which is always considered to be inert to precipitation in comparison to the ferrite phase, will become the active precipitating phase within a narrow temperature range above 900ºC, if the steel is plastically deformed.
Published by Wiley-VCH, Steel Research International is a well-respected journal in the fields of metallurgy, steelmaking, and metal forming. It was formerly known as “Archiv für das Eisenhüttenwesen” and “steel research” whose origins can be traced back to the 1920s.
