Objective
This lab supports the teaching and research in the fields of engineering mechanics and materials science, with emphasis on the characterisation of mechanical behaviour of metallic materials.
Facilities
1. INSTRON 5980 Tensile Tester
The loading capacity of this tensile tester is 150kN. It may be used for evaluation of strengths, elastic modulus, and tensile ductility of a wide range of metallic materials.
(Financially supported by the Science and Technology Fund of Macau (FDCT) through the grant 031/2010/A2)
2. Stress-Corrosion Tester (SCC-SSRT-50) from Advance Instrument Inc
This SCC tester has a loading capacity of 50 kN and includes a potentiostat and an autoclave. It may be used to perform SCC experiments on a variety of metals. It may also be used to conduct experiments under constant loads.
(Financially supported by the Science and Technology Fund of Macau (FDCT) through the grant 057/2015/A2)
3. Princeton VersaSTAT 3F Potentiostat
This potentiostat may be utilised to characterise the corrosion behaviours of a wide range of metals using, for example, the cyclic potentiodynamic polarisation test, open-circuit potential measurements.
4. INSTRON 8862 Low-Cycle Fatigue (LCF) Testing System
The loading capacity of this fatigue tester is 100 kN. It is particularly suitable for reverse-stress LCF testing and Thermomechanical Fatigue (TMF) testing of a variety of materials. The 8801 system of this lab is equipped with an environmental chamber which enables tests to be done at elevated temperatures.
5. INSTRON 8801 Servohydraulic Fatigue (Dynamic) Testing System
The loading capacity of this dynamic tester is 100 kN. It may be used for various static and dynamic testing conditions of a variety of materials. The 8801 system of this lab is equipped with an environmental chamber which enables tests to be done at elevated temperatures.
6. Cavitation Erosion Testers
The two cavitation testers (sonicators) can be used to study the cavitation erosion behaviour of materials (NB: These tester are placed in “Corrosion & Metallography Laboratory”).
(Financially supported by the Science and Technology Fund of Macau (FDCT) through the grant 069/2012/A3)
7. Leica Image Analyser
The image analyser is usable for phase quantification, grain size measurement, layer thickness measurement, etc (NB: This image analyser is placed in the “Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Laboratory”)
(Financially supported by the Science and Technology Fund of Macau (FDCT) through the grant 069/2012/A3)
8. Non-destructive Testing (NDT) Kits
The NDT kits of this lab are mainly for teaching purposes. They give students undertaking EMEB371, ELME722 and APME802 the opportunities of gaining hands-on practice on the NDT techniques introduced in the course materials. All of these NDT kits were purchased with financial supports from the Science and Technology Fund of Macau (FDCT).
8.1. An Ultrasonic Tester (YUSHI YUT-2600)
8.2. A Magnetic-particle Testing Kit (MAGNAFLUX YM-5 Yoke)
8.3. A Ferritscope (SHAOFAN FERRITE DTERM SP-10a)
8.4. An Eddy Current Tester (EDDYSUN ®)
