The 9th International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IMMC) 2023 Greater China Summit cum Summer Workshop on Mathematical Modeling was held on August 5-7 at the University of Macau. Middle school teachers and students from Macau, Hong Kong, the Mainland, and Taiwan, as well as about 130 specially invited distinguished scientists, members of the IMMC Chinese Academic Committee, expert groups for proposition and evaluation, and guests attended the meeting.
The IMMC Greater China Summit is the annual event of the International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IMMC) in Greater China. This conference is the first on-site conference in three-year after the epidemic. It is the first time to be held in Macau and hosted by the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Department of Mathematics of the University of Macau. At the opening ceremony, guests of honor, Mr. Ka Ki WONG, Deputy Director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macau SAR Government, and Dr. Ning HUA, Senior Director of IEEE Asia Pacific, expressed their greetings and thanks to all the teachers, students and expert judges who participated in the 9th International Mathematical Modeling Contest. Mr. Zhongkai DENG, IEEE Representative in Shenzhen, Associate Professor Ieng Tak LEONG, Associate Professor Guanghui HU, Department of Mathematics, University of Macau, and Professor Zhonghua QIAO, Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, Mr. Zhang Yanfeng, Co-Founder of IMMC, also attended the summit as the officiating guests.
In his speech, Deputy Director Ka Ki WONG introduced the development of STEM education in Macau. He emphasized the importance of Mathematics and STEM education, encouraged teachers and students to cultivate interdisciplinary and cross-boundary innovation skills through mathematical modeling, practiced modeling thinking and computational thinking, and honed their skills in identifying and solving problems, and welcomed teachers and students from all over the world to enhance the exchanges with Macau in the field of STEM education.

Dr. Ning HUA pointed out in his speech that for a long time, IMMC has provided a platform for scientific exploration, teamwork, and application of knowledge for the majority of participating students. Dr. HUA said that IEEE, as the world’s largest professional technical organization, encourages technological innovation and promotes human well-being, and has always supported middle school students to contact and explore the beauty of engineering. He encouraged the IMMC participating students to explore and practice boldly, and to lay a good foundation for a broad academic and career development in the future on the path of STEM learning.

The China Summit this year has invited Prof. Pui-In MAK, professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Macau and the director of the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI (University of Macau), to give a keynote speech on “A journey of creation: the story of microelectronics and chip technology in Macau”. As the title, he vividly introduced the development of microelectronics and chip technology in Macau, and especially told the story behind the outstanding work done by the University of Macau in the field of microelectronics and chips for the country and the world, which attracted great interest from the teachers and students present. The organizer specially arranged the participating teachers and students a tour visit to the Institute of Microelectronics of the University of Macau and the State Key Laboratory of VLSI during the workshops, so that teachers and students can see that chips play a ubiquitous role in the era of digital economy and artificial intelligence. Dealing small scale model connected to the whole world is the frontier field of interdisciplinary integration of microelectronics, mathematics, and computing technology. Professor Mak’s speech and the lab tour visit certainly inspired and encouraged the participating students profoundly.

The IMMC2023 Greater China Awards Ceremony was also held at the summit. Professor Zhonghua QIAO, Secretary-General of Hong Kong Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, member of IMMC Proposition and Review Committee, and Department of Applied Mathematics, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, congratulated the winning team and delivered an award speech.

In addition to the awards for the Greater China IMMC Chinese and International Contests, the Summit also presented the International Award(Global). A total of seven teams from Beijing Academy, Premier School Affiliated to Hou Kong, Pui Ching Middle School Macau, Shenzhen College of International Education, Diocesan Girls’ School of Hong Kong, HKU College, and Taipei Wei Girls’ High School won the awards in the International Award(Global), among which, the team of He Li, Runsheng Sun, Tianlang Gao, and Sirui Liu from Beijing Academy, and the team of SIN TENG TAM, XIN WANG, WENG SAM TANG, and CHENG HOU IP from Premier School Affiliated to Hou Kong were awarded the Meritorious Award of International Award(Global).

Congratulations to all the participating and winning teams this year! In fact, behind these teams and students are the instructors and schools that have trained and supported them over the years. Among these instructors and participating schools, many excellent representatives have emerged, who have done solid and outstanding work to promote and popularize mathematical modeling education, so the summit also presents the most weighty and meaningful awards – “IMMC Teaching Promotion Award” and “IMMC Inter-school Cooperation Award”.
After nine years of development, IMMC has made a wide impact internationally. More than 30 countries and regions, including China, the United States, Europe, and major countries in Asia, participate in IMMC, including Greater China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, with more than 900 teams participating this year. The International Conference on Mathematics Education (ICME) since 2016 and the International Conference on Teaching Mathematical Modeling (ICTMA) since 2019 have both set up IMMC sessions for three consecutive years, inviting award-winning teams or panelists to give presentations. In view of this, IMMC has set up two special awards, the “IMMC Teaching Promotion Award” and the ” IMMC Inter-school Cooperation Award “, to recognize outstanding teachers and advanced schools that have been effective in promoting mathematical modeling education in China from 2020 onwards, which is of great significance. The “IMMC Teaching Promotion Award” and ” IMMC Inter-school Cooperation Award ” recognize outstanding teachers and advanced schools that have been effective in promoting mathematics modeling education. The “IMMC Teaching Promotion Award” is awarded to instructors who have achieved remarkable results in promoting and popularizing mathematical modeling education for all students at all levels through the IMMC platform and promoting teaching with competitions; the ” IMMC Inter-school Cooperation Award” is awarded to instructors who have achieved remarkable results in promoting and popularizing mathematical modeling education for all students at all levels through the IMMC platform and promoting teaching with competitions. The “IMMC Inter-school Cooperation Award ” is awarded to the participating schools that have achieved remarkable results in promoting the advanced experience of school-based teaching and popularizing mathematical modeling education through the IMMC platform.
The schools that received the IMMC Inter-school Cooperation Award for the year 2023 are Premier School Affiliated to Hou Kong, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated High School, and Hong Kong Pui Ching College; and the teachers that received the IMMC Teaching Enhancement Award are Ms. Jingya ZHAO of Pui Ching Middle School Macau, and Ms. Miao LIN of Hongkou Experimental School, Shanghai. They received heartfelt congratulations from the IMMC organizers and the participating teachers and students.

To facilitate the sharing of teaching experiences among advanced schools and teachers, teachers workshop were also held during the Summit.
Ms. Jingya ZHAO of Pui Ching Middle School Macau, made a sharing on “Mathematical Modeling-From Theory to Practice”. For more than ten years on the road of modeling education, Pui Ching Middle School Macau has adhered to one original intention, two concepts, and has gone through three teaching modes in an effort to explore a development path suitable for itself. From focusing on participation to achieving good results, from little attempts to the integration of modeling thinking into the campus, it strives to develop and pass on the culture of secondary school modeling to more students.
Mr. Haonan ZHU from Beijing National Day School gave a presentation entitled “Incorporating Philosophy of Science into Mathematical Modeling Education-Mathematics Education for Human-oriented Purpose”. In traditional Chinese mathematics education, mathematics is often simply regarded as a training material for thinking, a means for talent selection and a technical tool for solving practical problems, and there is a lack of a human-oriented component of education, as well as education for the modern scientific paradigm. This presentation will focus on the important role of modern scientific paradigms in mathematical modeling, and discuss how to achieve a change in mathematics education from one oriented toward pragmatism and instrumentality to one oriented toward education for human purposes by integrating the philosophy of science into mathematical modeling education.

Ms. Xiao WANG from Beijing National Day School reported on “The Development of Mathematical Modeling Courses in the International Curricula”. What are the differences in the development of mathematical modeling courses for secondary school students in different cultural backgrounds and curriculum systems? What is something that international education has learned or can refer to? And what are the advantages of international education in the promotion of mathematical modeling curriculum? Ms. Xiao WANG ‘s report summarizes the current situation, trends and challenges in the development of mathematical modeling in the field of international education by comprehensively studying and analyzing the relevant literature on the development of mathematical modeling in international education. At the same time, she also summarized the eucalyptus cases and assessment criteria used in mathematical modeling education abroad in the literature, introduced the cases and summarized their characteristics.
The summit also invited Dr. Konstantin Avilov, who has been working as a proposer and reviewer for the IMMC International Expert Group for many years, to give a workshop on “Optimisation and Fitting Mathematical Models to data: Technical Procedure of Modeling” for the students, leading them to understand and practice the concepts and methodologies behind mathematical modeling in a “learning-by-doing” approach.

Participating students and teachers visited the State Key Laboratory of Microelectronics of the University of Macau on August 7th.
On August 7, the participating teachers and students were invited to visit the State Key Laboratory of Microelectronics of the University of Macau to explore its outstanding research achievements and scientific research strength in the field of microelectronics. The State Key Laboratory of Microelectronics of the University of Macau was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China through a rigorous review in November 2010, and has become the only State Key Laboratory of Integrated Circuits in the Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Bay Area at present. In December 2019, the laboratory set up the Hengqin Branch of the State Key Laboratory in the Zhuhai Institute of Technology (Zhuhai Institute of Technology). As a key discipline of the University of Macau, the microelectronics program boasts a world-leading level of academic innovation. The laboratory team has published 45 academic papers in ISSCC (International Solid-State Circuit Conference), the top international conference in the field of integrated circuit design, which is always at the top of the list in China, and is on a par with world-renowned institutions and top design companies, so its influence and research and development strength cannot be ignored.
第九屆國際數學建模挑戰賽(IMMC)2023年度中華峰會暨數學建模夏季工作坊於8月5-7日在澳門大學隆重舉行。來自澳門及香港、內地和臺灣的中學師生,與特邀傑出科學家、IMMC中華學術委員會成員、命題與評審專家組和嘉賓約130餘人與會。
IMMC中華峰會是國際數學建模挑戰賽在大中華區年度活動的收官與高潮。本屆大會是三年疫情以來的首次線下實體會議,亦是首次在澳門舉行,由澳門大學科技學院及數學系承辦。開幕式上,主禮嘉賓澳門特別行政區政府教育及青年發展局黃嘉祺副局長,以及IEEE亞太區高級總監華甯博士向全體參加第九屆國際數學建模大賽的師生、專家評委表示問候與感謝,並向獲獎團隊師生致以熱烈的祝賀。IEEE駐深圳代表鄧鐘凱先生,澳門大學數學系梁應德副教授、胡光輝副教授,香港工業與應用數學學會秘書長喬中華教授,IMMC聯合創辦人張岩峰先生作為峰會主禮嘉賓亦出席峰會。

本屆中華峰會榮幸邀得澳門大學電機及電腦工程系教授、超大型積體電路國家重點實驗室主任麥沛然教授做“傑出科技科技成就”主題報告,以《澳門三十年的晶片之旅》為題,生動地介紹了微電子與晶片科技在澳門的發展,特別講述了澳門大學在微電子和晶片領域為國家和世界所做傑出工作背後的故事,吸引了與會師生極大的興趣。會議還特別安排與會師生在會議和工作坊期間參觀了澳門大學微電子研究院和超大型積體電路國家重點實驗室,讓師生看到晶片在數位經濟與人工智慧時代扮演著無所不在的角色,縮微之內連廣宇,是微電子學與數學、計算技術等多學科交叉融合的前沿領域,麥教授的報告和實地參觀,給與會師生帶來深刻的啟迪與激勵。

祝賀今年所有的參賽和獲獎團隊!其實在這些團隊和同學們的背後,是多年來培養和支持他們的指導教師和學校。在這些指導老師和參賽學校中,湧現了不少優秀的代表,為推廣和普及數學建模教育做出了扎實而出色的工作,所以,峰會也頒發最有份量和意義的獎項——“IMMC教學促進獎”和“IMMC先進共建獎”。

2023年度獲得IMMC先進共建獎的學校是澳門濠江中學英才附屬學校、上海交通大學附屬中學、香港培正書院;獲得IMMC教學促進獎的老師是澳門培正中學趙婧雅老師、上海虹口實驗學校繆琳老師。他們獲得了IMMC主辦機構和與會師生的由衷祝賀。

為了促進先進學校和教師的教學經驗分享,峰會期間還舉行了教師工作坊。
澳門培正中學趙婧雅老師做了《數學建模-從理論到實踐》的分享。十多年建模教育之路,培正中學堅持一個初衷,兩個概念,歷經三種教學模式,努力探索適合自己的發展道路。從重在參與到取得不錯的成績,從點滴嘗試到建模思維的融入校園,努力將中學建模文化發展與傳承,讓更多的學生參與其中。
北京市十一學校的朱浩楠老師的報告題目是《將科學哲學融入數學建模教育——面向以人為目的的數學教育》。在傳統的中國數學教育中,往往簡單地將數學視為思維訓練素材、人才選拔手段和解決實際問題的技術工具,缺少面向以人為目的的教育成分,以及針對現代科學範式的教育。本次報告將聚焦于現代科學範式在數學建模中的重要作用,並討論如何通過將科學哲學融入數學建模教育,從而實現數學教育從面向實用主義和工具性的教育,面向以人為目的的教育的改變。
北京十一學校朱浩楠老師在教師工作坊做分享
北京市十一學校的王瀟老師報告了《國際課程中數學建模課程的發展》。在不同文化背景和課程體系下,中學生數學建模課程的發展有什麼不同?有什麼是國際教育已經學習或者可以參考的地方?國際教育在數學建模課程的推廣上又有哪些優勢?王瀟老師的報告通過綜合研究和分析關於國際教育中數學建模發展情況的相關文獻,總結了國際教育領域中數學建模的發展現狀、趨勢和遇到的挑戰。同時,她還通過總結文獻中國外做數學建模教育中使用的桉例和評估標準,介紹了案例並總結了其特點。
峰會還特別邀請到多年擔任IMMC國際專家組命題和評審工作的Konstantin Avilov博士,為與會同學做了從學理到動手實踐的工作坊——《數學模型的優化與擬合:建模過程及技能》,以“邊做邊學”的方法帶領同學們瞭解和實踐數學建模背後的理念和方法論。

8月7日與會師生參觀澳門大學微電子國家重點實驗室
8月7日,與會師生們應邀參觀了澳門大學微電子國家重點實驗室,探尋其在微電子領域的卓越研究成果和科研實力。澳門大學微電子國家重點實驗室於2010年11月獲得中華人民共和國科學技術部的嚴格評審通過,成為目前粵港澳大灣區唯一的積體電路國家重點實驗室。2019年12月,該實驗室在珠研院設立了國家重點實驗室橫琴分部。作為澳門大學的重點學科,微電子專業擁有世界領先的學術創新水準。實驗室團隊在積體電路設計領域的國際頂級會議ISSCC(國際固態電路會議)上發表的學術論文達到45篇,常年位居國內榜首,與世界知名院校和頂尖設計公司齊名,影響力與研發實力不可忽視。
